The adit was made 1760-1777 and has a length of 80 m. In the beginning gunpowder was used, which
gives the rough rock surface visible on the picture.
In the far end of the adit the light from a vertical shaft is seen. |
Further in the propelling method was changed to fire. Wood was stacked against the wall and set on fire.
When the wall finally cooled it had turned brittle some decimeters in and could be wrenched loose.
The surface of the walls becomes very smooth using this method. |
When the vertical shaft was reached the adit was widened to a room.
Here horses were used to hoist ore and workers. The horses walked round and round and drove a
hoisting machine. This construction was replaced by a steam engine in the 19th century. It was severely
damaged by the collapse in the mine in 1875. (The benches are modern)
